~ Siem Reap ~ Visit to Angkor Wat
|
|
Actually from the outside, I didn't know there's more to see in the inside. Once I've entered the main entrance, I was overwhelmed. I couldn't careless about what the tourguide was busy trying to explain about the relief on the wall.. I just took it away Lee Leng, my friend and walked straight to the pond, in hope to capture my all time purpose of visiting this ancient Angkor - to capture the Angkor Wat with reflection over the water.. would be doubly cool if it was sunset / sunrise timing.. but I was there during the hot blazing afternoon.. sometimes the cloud would block the sun.. but I was so thrilled to be there..
Climbing up all the to the top of Angkor Wat is very scary! Maybe I'm afraid of falling and hurting myself, that's why -- you know how clumsy I can be.. my camera was dangling over my shoulder, and I was carrying my bag over my shoulder, and had to make my way up the ultra steep & narrow steps... I'm glad I survived.. my mom must be so proud of herself, she made it too, right behind me. Where she knew she had no choice, as she cant go down without the railing! (The railing is on the other side, we climbed up without going thru the easy / very sunny way)

~ Siem Reap ~ Visit to Angkor Thom
|
|
Inside the big area of Angkor Thom (capital of Angkor), you can find the grand Bayon temple (the name originated from Banyan tree), the temple in the jungle (Ta Phrom), the King Palaces (ruins left), and many other wat / what's left of stones..
Bayon was built by King Jayavarman 7th (my tourguide fave king) because he respected both Buddhism and Hinduism, and thus all the temples built by him has a combination of both Buddhist (I would guess its Mahayana) and Hindu influence.
Angkor Wat is just a Hindu temple built after King Jayavarman 7th, to worship lord Vishnu. There's 3 gods in Hinduism for worshiping (ok i forgot all the names)..
So King Jayavarman 8th was a Hindu, so he (probably) took down the Buddhist influence on the architecture.
Then came the fall of Khmer empire in the 14th or 15th century, Theravadan Buddhism came spreading from the 16th century onward.
Nowadays, most Cambodians are Theravada Buddhist.

~ SiemReap ~ Phnom Bakheng
|
|
On the first day of arrival, it was drizzling on and off, we to the town market before adjourn to the hilltop temple called "Phnom Bakheng". We read that if you're entering the Angkor compound in the late evening, you do not need to buy the pass. Our tourguide brought us to Phnom Bakheng to view the sunset, but it was cloudy for that day for us. Nonetheless, most of us managed to climb up, on the slipery and dangerous path! There were lots of tourist at the top, its easy to get a good shot of the area without having any humans inside

~ Sakyadhita Conference Opening Ceremony ~
|
|
If you wanna know how 'kaypoh' I can be, I got out of bed early in the morning on a weekend, just so to grab my camera along, for the talk of town Buddhist event for the year ~ the 9th Sakyadhita Conference on Buddhist Women ~
There were many reporters around, obviously they were all carrying large bulky SLR with very long-lense, and me? My tiny S2IS no match... one teacher saw me, dragged me aside and ask "are you the official photographer? " .. well yes I am, from the 'kaypoh news agency'
When Dato' OKT was seated right in the centre infront, just like every other busybody reporter trying to snap nonstop I was part of them too.. squeezing under all the huge camera..
Then what about the event?! Hmm... I like the 24-drum performance by the primary school students.. totally awesome. The sinhalese dance, i've seen many times. The Tibetan 'san-ge' singing didn't captivate the audience, Malaysians dont sing on mountains The opening with having different types of Puja chanting in various languages is good learning point. I have no idea what they were all chanting about, except for the Theravada and Mahayana culture. They had Tibetan, Korean, Vietnamese...
The Koreans were particularly so sweet they gave some of the ladies souvenirs at the end of the ceremony after the freak downpour. It was blazing hot in the whole morning, but when participants was lining up / arranging themselves for the grand photo shoot outside the hall, it started to drizzle abit, with the sky is not dark.. I was busy trying to position myself, but there's no way I can fit everybody into my lense without a wide-angle lense, unlike all those power camera positioned right in the centre. When I stood right beside the official camera, I cannot fit both the left & right side of the people posing!
So anyway, the raindrop started to POUR .. oh pity everybody who'd to rush back into the hall, and in a flash, Dato' OKT's car arrived to pick him up, and luckily there was umbrella around to cover this senior nun walking with a stick who was seated right at the end.
Enjoy the pictuers...
